DENVER – Following last night’s resounding defeat of Proposition HH, Colorado Senate Republicans pressed forward with their effort to provide meaningful tax relief to the people of Colorado, and once again called on Governor Jared Polis to convene a special legislative session.

“The people of Colorado have spoken. They rejected the idea that the Tax Payer Bill of Rights had to die to get property tax relief,” Senate Minority Leader Paul Lundeen said. “True leadership can’t wait. It is urgent that we address the property tax crisis that will drive people from their homes. The Governor must call a special session now. The legislature must act.”

“The cost of everything from groceries to health care has skyrocketed in this state thanks to careless Democrat leadership,” Senator Kirkmeyer, ranking member on the Joint Budget Committee said. “Governor Polis must convene a special session so the legislature can get to work to protect taxpayers, rein in spending, and build a better Colorado. Our priority should be to ensure you keep your hard earned money in your pocket. Two weeks ago, Republicans stood outside of the Governor’s office and presented our solutions to save Coloradans real money and lower taxes – it is the Governor’s responsibility to reconvene the legislature so we can implement them.”

The Colorado Senate Republicans have been calling on Governor Polis to convene a special legislative session since the final days of the 2023 legislative session.

At a press conference two weeks ago, Colorado Senate and House Republicans unveiled three solutions to permanently lower taxes for Coloradans.

Proposition HH was created by the Democrats’ Senate Bill 23-303, which was introduced, voted on, and passed in the final weekend of the 2023 legislative session. Had Proposition HH passed, Coloradans’ TABOR refund would have been used to backfill a slight and temporary reduction in the statewide residential assessment rate.
