DENVER – Today, Colorado Senate Democrats killed Senate Bill 23-030, which would have created a state income tax credit for Colorado teachers to use for their classroom expenses.
This bill, sponsored by Senator Janice Rich (R – Grand Junction) and Representative Matt Soper (R – Delta), represents a multi-year effort by Colorado Republicans to give teachers tax credits for school supplies. Democrats killed similar Republican efforts in 2019 (SB19-060), 2020 (SB20-050), and 2022 (HB22-1126).
During the committee hearing today, multiple teachers from across the state testified on the benefits of this bill.
“Teachers in Colorado routinely invest their own money in educating their students,” Senator Rich commented. “This simple bill would have kept more money in teachers’ pockets by offering vital tax relief. By killing this bill, Democrats are failing to recognize and appreciate the invaluable contributions teachers make to our society. I am immensely disappointed in my Democrat colleagues.”
Senate Bill 23-030 was killed on a party line vote in the Senate State, Veterans, & Military Affairs committee this afternoon.
