President Grantham’s Statement on the Secretary of the Senate

DENVER – This morning, Colorado Senate President Kevin J. Grantham issued the following statement regarding Senate Minority Leader Leroy Garcia’s misstep in attempting to terminate the employment of Secretary of the Senate Effie Ameen:

“On Wednesday of last week – the day before Thanksgiving – Senate President-designee Leroy Garcia incorrectly informed the Secretary of the Senate, Effie Ameen, that her employment was terminated. Between Wednesday, the 23rd of November, and today, Secretary Ameen’s Capitol access, email access, and computer access were unjustly terminated.

Setting aside the audacity to fire a nonpartisan Senate staff member the day before Thanksgiving, the Secretary of the Senate is a staff member who is elected by the 35 members of the Colorado State Senate, and as such, cannot be unilaterally removed by any one member of the body.

I have demanded that Effie Ameen be reinstated, as per law, as she is still the elected Secretary of the Colorado State Senate.”
