Gardner Bills to Clarify Court Procedures Pass Committee

Denver -- Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved Senator Bob Gardner's (R-El Paso County) bills to clarify court procedures, increase access, and ensure that courts continue to act in good faith.

House Bill 17-1071 creates a process for refunding all costs, fees, and fines to defendants who are acquitted of a crime or the conviction is vacated.

House Bill 17-1142 allows courts to send electronic notices of hearings in addition to mail notices.

"Ensuring that our system is acting responsibly to provide justice for both victims of crimes, as well as those acquitted of crimes is essential to maintaining the integrity of the judicial branch," said Gardner. "These bills help to improving our court system in the digital age and provide whatever peace of mind and restitution we can for those whose convictions have been vacated."

Both bills now continue on to a vote of the Committee of the Whole.
