WE WERE delighted to learn that Sen. Kevin Grantham has been appointed to the state Joint Budget Committee. The bipartisan, six-member committee is arguably the most important in the legislature, since — as the Senate website explains — it is “statutorily charged with analyzing the management, operations, programs, and fiscal needs of the departments of state government.”
Which is a fancy way of saying that the committee oversees and makes crucial decisions about the state’s $24 billion budget.
So it’s wonderful news for all of Southern Colorado that Sen. Grantham, a Republican from Canon City who just won re-election in the state’s 2nd District, gained the nod from his majority caucus to join this fundamental committee. Before earning the appointment, Sen. Grantham was the minority whip and sat on the Senate appropriations, finance and legislative council committees.
